Understanding Lamination Thickness

classic top heating laminatorThe laminating capacity of a laminating machine usually depends on many factors, including film material, thickness, laminating process, etc.The thickness standard of the film used by the laminating machine is microns, and the specific thickness needs to be selected according to different application scenarios.

Common specifications of film thickness

1. Single-sided lamination: usually around 12-18 microns thick.

2. Double-sided lamination: around 25-30 microns thick.

3. High-strength lamination: around 30-40 microns thick.

The thickness of
MEFU PVC laminating film is 48 microns, and PVC composite film is an ideal low-cost product compared to traditional pressure-sensitive composite products. The lamination thickness of MEFU roll-to-roll laminator is between 0.9"-1.1", and the maximum lamination thickness of flatbed laminator is 1.9".

For oil paintings, photos and other items that need to be protected, thicker films should be selected for lamination to ensure better preservation. For some posters, printed materials and other materials that need to maintain high color vividness, it is most appropriate to choose thinner films.

What are the main factors affecting the selection of lamination thickness?

Relationship between lamination thickness and performance

Generally speaking, the thicker the lamination thickness, the better its strength and protection performance, which can effectively prevent erosion by water vapor, ultraviolet rays, etc., and prolong the storage time. However, too much lamination thickness may affect the color vividness and flexibility, and lose the authenticity before lamination.

Relationship between lamination thickness and picture effect

1. Glossy lamination:

Color: Enhance the color saturation of the image and make the color look more vivid.

Gloss: The surface is smooth and reflects light, giving people a high-end feeling.

Cleanliness: The surface is not easy to be stained with dirt and can be easily wiped.

2. Matt lamination:

Soft Vision: Provides softer color expression, suitable for elegant or retro style designs.

Anti-glare: Reduces reflections, suitable for use in bright environments.

Touch: Usually has a better touch, giving people a sense of luxury.

3. Scratch-resistant coating:

Durability: Increases the wear resistance of the surface, suitable for occasions that require frequent contact.

Protective: Effectively prevents scratches and damage, and extends the life of the picture.

4. Waterproof coating:

Moisture-proof: Suitable for use in humid environments, protecting the picture from moisture.

Cleanliness: Can also be easily cleaned to keep the picture clean.

5. Special effect coating:

Metallic texture: Can create unique visual effects and attract attention.

Relief effect: Increase the three-dimensional sense and enhance the level of design.

Relationship between lamination thickness, temperature and pressure.

1. Temperature:

Adhesion performance: Higher temperature usually improves the adhesion performance of the film, so that the adhesion between the film and the substrate is enhanced.

Film fluidity: The increase in temperature makes the film material softer, easier to cover irregular surfaces, and reduces the generation of bubbles and wrinkles.

2. Pressure:

Adhesion: Applying appropriate pressure can increase the contact area between the film and the substrate, improve adhesion, and ensure that the film and the graphics can fit evenly.

Thickness control: Excessive pressure will cause excessive compression of the film, affect the thickness of the film, and may cause damage or deformation of the film; insufficient pressure may cause poor adhesion between the film and the graphics.

3. Balance of lamination thickness, temperature and pressure:

When choosing lamination thickness, it is necessary to consider the combination of temperature and pressure. Thicker films may require higher temperatures and pressures to ensure good bonding, while thinner films may be best laminated at lower temperatures and pressures.

For non-heat-sensitive materials, we generally choose cold lamination. The cold lamination process needs to pay attention to problems such as bubbling, wrinkles and curling after lamination. Cold lamination under low temperature heating conditions can effectively reduce the occurrence of lamination problems.
